What is significant about the Homburg-style hat?

When the producers leave to find Franz, Max puts on a Homburg-style hat along with his coat. Leo is entranced by the hat and asks Max if he can wear one as well. Max refuses, saying that it will not be until Leo is a full producer that he can wear a producer's hat.
