How is Max responsible for Leo's absence in act 2, scene 6?

Fleeing to Rio with the money is Max's plan for when the show fails. However, with the success of the show, Max is now in serious trouble with the law. Leo, strangely, is the one to take the money and run away to Rio. If it had not been for Max's influence, Leo would never have been corrupt or brave enough to leave the country (an action Max would likely not have had any trouble performing).
