How does Leo end up coming to Max's defense in the courtroom?

Leo unexpectedly returns from Rio with Ulla to come to Max's defense. In front of the court, Leo acknowledges that he betrayed Max by leaving him and that he is also to blame for the fraudulent accounting for Springtime for Hitler. He then goes on to say that Max has made him a better person, a point which Max also acknowledges true for himself as well.
