What was one of most extraordinary engineering feats of WWII? Why was this done?

The "Big Inch" was an oil pipeline that ran from Texas to the East Coast. This helped the US move oil faster and with less risk of having oil shipped from Texas to other parts of the United States targeted by the German U-boats.
