What was Japan's interest in the East Indies? What plans were developed around the East Indies?

Japan wanted the oil that the East Indies produced so it could reduce it's dependence on U.S. oil. They developed a plan to occupy the East Indies. On the other side, oil companies in the East Indies created plans to shut down their operations and sabotage the wells if the Japanese invaded.
