Thomas Edison's invention of the incandescent light bulb threatened the profits that Standard earned from some of its products. Americans now had the ability to use artificial light rather than relying on oil-based lighting. Standard began to focus on gasoline. This strategy was successful as automobiles gained quickly in popularity and more people purchased one.
