Who is S. Morgenstern from The Princess Bride and what is their importance?

S. Morgenstern is the supposed writer of The Princess Bride. There is little evidence that S. Morgenstern is a real person, and it is more likely that William Goldman created him as an integral piece of his own masterful plotline.
