Who is The Hermit from The Prince and the Pauper and what is their importance?

Edward discovers the Hermit deep in the woods after he escapes from John Canty. The hermit believes he is an archangel, but he is also one of the only people who actually believes Edward when he claims to be the Prince of Wales.
