In his Prefatory Letter, why did Erasmus marvel at the sensitivity of present-day ears?

Erasmus marveled that the people of his day were so sensitive that they refused to hear jokes made about popes and princes. He even claimed that many were more willing to listen to blasphemies against Christ than criticisms about men.
