Who is Father Jose from The Power and the Glory and what is their importance?

Father Jose is a Catholic priest who has chosen to marry his housekeeper instead of being killed. He has chosen the humiliating act out of fear of death, and lives on a government pension. He is constantly ridiculed by the local children. At the end of the novel he refuses the priest a last confession before his execution because he is afraid of persecution.
