In yet another part of town the fat, sad Father José is sitting in his house reflecting on his poor life. He had been a priest for forty years and now was forced to marry his housekeeper. As he sits his wife nags him from the other room to come to bed but he ignores her. He is feeling sorry for himself as a sinner; he thinks with envy of the other priests who died. It was over so quickly for them, yet his painful life continues.
