Emily Dickinson uses a great deal of imagery from the Christian Bible in her poetry. For instance, in her first poem Emily notes that the one who will not serve the sovereign will hang from a tree. This idea may refer to Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus Christ to the Romans, an action that led to Jesus' crucifixion. Judas hanged himself soon after he betrayed Jesus.
