Christy’s murder of his father drives the plot, as the murder can be seen as both literal and metaphorical - in terms of the former, Christy actually does attempt to kill his father. On the other hand, he is also celebrated not for striking an old man, but rather, for representing an act of rebellion against social expectation in general.
