Who is the protagonist in The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe?

The protagonist in The Pit and the Pendulum remains unnamed, and yet we know something about him. The particular death sentence he's been handed out is very unique and peculiar, so we can assume that whatever it is he did was also above and beyond the ordinary in the eyes of the Spanish Inquisitors. We know he's a little unstable but is also a bit of a philosopher.
