Why is Jack angry with the conditions Philip gives him in order for him to be master builder of Kingsbridge cathedral?

Philip tells Jack that he and Aliena must live apart. Jack visits Aliena every day but must leave before nightfall. Jack and Aliena never kiss for fear it will lead to something more and cause trouble with Philip.
