The setting for the sequel to Ember (The People of Sparks) is a post apocolyptic Earth where the people have just emerged from their lives underground. They spend the first few days walking in the woods until they come to an aboveground village called Sparks. It is a farming community and they agree to take in the over 400 survivors from Ember.
