What happens to Coyotito? How does this motivate the characters? Why is he included in the story?

Coyotito is shot by a bullet from the trackers. This is what finally causes Kino to give up on his pearl. Kino realizes the pearl has destroyed his real treasure, his baby. Kino eventually throws his pearl back into the ocean.
