Contrast Kino's life to the doctor's life.

Kino lives a poor, simple life, while the Doctor lives in luxury. They are character foils in that they live opposite lives and have opposite traits. The doctor is lazy and greedy while Kino is hard working and content, at least content until he finds the Pearl.
