The appearance of the steam engine on the scene increases the impetus to build a canal. This is because it transforms oceanic travel. A canal will save costs, cut travel time, and expand travel. Travel around the tip of South America will be virtually eliminated, and cost reductions will parallel those that took place when the Suez Canal came on the scene.
