What do you find to be Ferdinand de Lesseps' most interesting characteristic and why?

Ferdinand de Lesseps most interesting characteristic is that he is not willing to sit back and retire. He has finished the Suez Canal when he is in his 60s. He is taking a great risk by attempting the Panama Canal, and he need not have. De Lesseps is at this point entering his 70s. He just cannot quit.
