When Odile was nine, her Aunt Caroline discovered that her husband was having an affair, and he had gotten the girl pregnant. She filed for divorce, and he moved the girl into their home. Aunt Caroline had asked Odile's mother for help, but she refused because divorce was a sin. Odile had determined that she would never let that happen to her. She would learn a trade, get a job, and save money so she could take care of herself.
