Why does Lily's mother go to the hospital?

Lily's mother has been having trouble with shortness of breath and getting tired easily. She collapses and Lily's father has to take her to the hospital. The doctor orders tests. An EKG shows that Brenda has had several heart attacks, which have caused extensive damage. The doctor gives her weeks to live.
