One evening Margaret is asked to show her papers. When it is discovered that she is English, she is taken to the police. There she spends the night with three elderly women who have also been detained because they are English. She reads to them from The Priory before they all bed down for the night. A guard wakes her and tells her he is letting her go. All he asks is that she meet him once a day and read him the rest of the novel.
