Margaret moved to Paris with her husband and her four-year-old daughter. Margaret struggles with the language, shopping, and having no friends. The consul's wife directs her to the American Library. When Margaret goes there, Odile greets her and helps her find some books for herself and her daughter. Then she takes Margaret to the staff room and serves her scones and tea. For the first time since arriving in Paris, Margaret feels happy and at home.
