When Kitty asks Waddington his thoughts on immortality, he instead focuses his reply on the purpose of life. Waddington feels that what men create out of chaos is true beauty. "The pictures they paint, the music they compose, the books they write and the lives they lead," are more important to him than where men go after they die. He also remarks that the beauty of life is the perfect work of art.
