As Kitty is carried through the city to Walter's deathbed she realizes a sense of death pervades the entire city. She is struck by how very dark and quiet it is, as all the streets are abandoned and the shops are shuttered. The deserted city seems ghostly with only the random howls of dogs penetrating the night.
