The author ises the Kiddush cup to symbolize tragedy. The cup, important in Jewish religious ritual, is saved and kept by Herr Neuhoff, and is given to Astrid when she comes to work for him. The cup represents everything Astrid has lost, and it symbolizes the tragedies of Nazism –that good, innocent people were killed, such as those in Astrid’s family.
