The boy spends a lot of time outdoor, especially late at night after his mother has gone to bed. While in the woods, he watches the town go to sleep and hears voices. They tell him to avenge his father's death. He asks how he can do that and is promised that the way will be made clear. He swears that he will do what they ask.
