What is unknown or unclear about the men's situation?

It is not explained why these men are in this tiny boat, where they are headed, or from where they are returning. The only reference regarding this in Part 1 is that their location is Mosquito Inlet Lighthouse where they hope to find refuge. Additionally, the reason for the captain's injury is not explained.
