The One is told chronologically, from beginning to end, and the chapters are approximately the same length. As it is the continuation of a series, but the final installment in the series about America’s Selection experience, it starts at a point during America’s journey which finds her at a point of destruction, as symbolized by the fact that the narrative opens with a rebel attack and her misstep in trying to impress Maxon, and follows her nonlinear steps towards growth. In the end, she finds her identity and grows as symbolized by the fact that she becomes Maxon’s wife.

In addition, as this is part of a series, there are references to events that happened in the previous installments of the series and things that people should remember because they may be of importance in future novels about America and her family. Still, the overall narrative is written in such a way that readers can enjoy it in a standalone manner without having to read the previous installments in order to understand the current events.
