Why does Lettie say the narrator cannot stay in the ocean forever in Chapter 13?

The narrator cannot stay in the ocean forever because it would destroy him. It wouldn’t kill him, it would destroy and dissolve him. If he stayed in long enough, a little bit of him would exist everywhere all spread out. Then there would be nothing left that would think of itself as an “I.”
