What event causes William to leave the gang in the novel, The Nuclear Age?

When William's father play-acts as General Custer during an annual festival at Fort Derry, and play-acts Custer's death, William comes to see the senselessness of all death. As a result, he forms the belief that nothing is worth dying for, which leads to his fundamental split from the rest of the gang.
