Why does Addison compare himself to the "November criminals" in the novel, The November Criminals?

The term "November criminals" serves as a symbol of the low opinion Addison reveals to have of himself. Historically, the November Criminals were the worst of Germany's people during the interwar years. The term refers to those who hated Jews, were corrupt officials, and had no redeeming traits. Addison says he is like the November Criminals, and has no good traits of his own.
