The Night She Disappeared
How is Scarlett's home, Dark Place, described in the novel, The Night She Disappeared?
.
.
Dark Place is Scarlett’s home, a magnificent mansion with a rich and macabre history. It lies through the woods, within walking distance of Upfield Common, but closer to a hamlet called Upley Fold. The house is known for its stylish swimming pool, modern art and classy interior design, and it showcases the glitzy, ultra-modern side of the family that live there. It is “a perfect blend of old and new” (392). In describing the “hodgepodge of disparate architectural styles, blended almost seamlessly together across three wings,” the novel suggests the house’s capacity to assimilate the character of different eras and different owners: “it should be a mess, [but] it is exquisitely beautiful” (36).
