What are the motifs in The Neon Bible by John Kennedy Toole?

Abandonment is a motif. Aunt Mae never really wanted to move in with her sister, and secretly awaited her next big opportunity. She settles for small town life during David's childhood and adolescence and appreciates certain aspects of it. She gains more attention by being the only woman in the valley who is capable of singing like the girls in the movies and she dresses more extravagantly than any of the locals. This is the attention she thirsts for and holds onto, allowing her to survive many years in the town. She also become David's single companion and best friend. She spends hours playing with him and walking down Main Street together. David reveres her as someone he loved spending time with.
