What is the main conflict in The Necessary Grace to Fall by Gina Ochsner?

The main conflict in the story is centered around Howard and his internal conflict... his desire to alienate himself from the living and embrace death. In the end, his desire to see what life still has to offer wins out over the desire to end his own life.
