Why does Mr. Vandergelder disapprove of his niece's suitor in the play, The Matchmaker?

Mr. Vandergelder does not approve of Ambrose, Ermengarde's suitor, because he is an artist. Mr. Vandergelder does not feel someone in that profession could support his niece.
