How did the attack on Fort Sumter affect Grant? Why?

Things changed for Grant after the initial attack on Fort Sumter. Grant, like many other commanders, was elected to head a recruiting committee for Galena. It is said that Grant's demeanor changed that very day. This may have happened because Grant now had a reason to fight for his country, other than taking land from others and being, in a sense, a bully.
