Why does a portion of the MAV remain and why is it useful?

The bottom half of the MAV was left behind because NASA doesn’t put unnecessary mass into orbit. The landing gear, ingress ramp, and fuel plant are still there. The fuel plant is especially useful because it can be used to create CO2, which Mark can use to create O2, which is one of the elements he needs to create water.
