After Minerva is captured, French feels that their group lacks purpose, and he leads the effort to rescue her. French is captivated by Rose as soon as they meet, and his first thought is that he hopes they are not related, which means he wants to have a relationship with her. While French is still young, he is already showing leadership qualities, and he knows that Miig is helping him develop those. French is somewhat naive, however, and misses many of the signs that Wab and Chi-Boy are a couple. He longs for a stronger connection with his heritage, but he fails to take advantage of Minerva's wisdom to learn. French becomes more self-aware towards the end of the novel. He finds greater purpose and identity.
