Emily G. listens to a speech by then President Reagan. She believes that he is "not cogent" because he does not speak proper prose. Emily is able to avoid being taken in by the speech because she is not caught up in the meaning of Reagan's words, but instead hears errors in tone. She sees that the president speaks in "loops and turns" while others cannot see this. Emily G. can understand some aspects of speech much better than others.
