Why does Gutman want to keep Spade on his good side in the novel, The Maltese Falcon?

Gutman does not want to discard Spade, because the detective may be able to provide further information on the location of the falcon. He also does not want to lose Spade, since Spade has the background and skills to maneuver through the city of San Francisco.
