Why does Brigid say she sought Spade's help?

Brigid says when it became clear to herself and Thursby that Cairo intended to go ahead with the plan and cut them out, they took the falcon and headed for San Francisco. By the time the pair arrived, Brigid realized that Thursby planned to back out of paying her. That is the reason she sought Spade's help in the first place
