Who is the antagonist in The Magic Barrel by Bernard Malamud?

Pinye Salzman has ulterior motives when he takes on Leo Finkle as a client. Pinye is manipulative in the sense that he wants Leo to marry his wayward daughter. I think, however, the real antagonist is within Leo himself. He feels the inability to love God and searches for a wife to lead him to God.
