Why does Wilkerson decide to leave the conspirators in the novel, The Lynchers?

Wilkerson, a fifth-grade teacher, decides he cannot be a part of the conspiracy when he sees the daughter of the woman they plan to kill. Seeing her, makes him realize that he cannot go through with it.
