What happens to Emery when he meets with Anna in the novel, The Luminaries?

Emery is in love with Anna, and after spending the night with her, he disappears. He reappears weeks later with a bad wound and an opium addiction. He tried opium because Anna is an opium eater and was left in a haze. In the end, he loses his mine claims, his properties, and he faces jail time.
