The effects of child abuse is a recurring idea. As the novel begins the reader is bombarded with the horrible after effects of child abuse. Georgie is not only forced to physical abuse, but he is also forced to take a large amount of verbal abuse. Much of the story is his quest to trust others and overcome what has happened to him. One of the ill affects of child abuse is the constant lack of trust that young children feel for others. For so long, they have been lied to by people that are supposed to love them that they are unable to begin trusting others.
