Who was Amber, and how did Herriot treat her?

Amber was a dog that was taken in by Sister Rose who had a terrible case of mange. Herriot grew attached to the dog and tried in vain to cure her of it. He realized that he had let the dog suffer needlessly by becoming too attached to it, and he put her to sleep.
