How does the author use foreshadowing in The Long Walk?

While Baker and Garraty are conversing, Garraty says that he wonders whether Stebbins will live or die. Baker responds that they're all going to die. This foreshadows the fate of the participants and alludes to the fact that the boys are aware that the penalty for their participation is death.
