When the Higgins Institute decides there is nothing more they can do for Mike, they send him to public school. The summer before the change is implemented, Mike is extremely anxious and begins distracting himself by learning to pick locks. This foreshadows Mike's career path. Mike's obsession with learning to open locks can also be traced back to the trauma he experienced at the age of eight, which is directly linked to his interest in learning to open locks and eventually safes.
